Sunrise On Kammabaai Beach
Not much enjoying this lockdown we are having for the virus. But one of the few upsides is the sunrise we get to see on our morning walks for exercise.

Bird Of Paradise Flower – Strelitzia
Strelitizia is a perennial plant native to South Africa. It belongs to the plant family, Strelitziaceae. It is named after the duchy of Mecklenburg – Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. It’s common name is bird of paradise flower, because the flowers resemble these birds. In South Africa it is called the Crane Flower and can be found on the reverse side of our 50 cent coins.
I have always loved these bright blooms, with their strange shapes. I often see them in and around Hermanus, where I live. There are lots of clusters on the Cliff Path, a local foot path along the coastline here. They are a joy to photograph.

We have been on lockdown here in South Africa since the end of March. The virus which was a distant threat, had come to our shores and after that things changed very quickly. I took this photo of the empty Main Road where I live on April 4, 2020, a few days into the lockdown.
I took this photo from our driveway of our once busy Main Road which normally has traffic day and night, and in peak season we can not get into the traffic going into town, we have to get into the oncoming lane and go around the Voëlklip Traffic Circle to double back.
There is only one road that runs through our town, and this is it. Freight, goods, trucks, emergency vehicles and many others, all travel this road to their various destinations.
I was very humbled today to receive an email informing me that my image had been chosen to be a part of a online exhibition called, When you can’t find the words. I will include the link below to the image gallery and the video that was made from the images.

Garlicky Goodness
Apart from being a natural anti oxidant and antiseptic, garlic is very good for your cardiovascular health and boosts your immune system. it has been known to reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol, and has been shown to aid the immune systems of those who get sick often.
It contains active sulphuric compounds, and a chemical Allicin is released when is crushed, chopped or chewed. It is an unstable compound that does not last long. So best to eat your garlic as soon as you process it.

Feng Shui on Voëlklip Beach
How cool is this rock pile statue that I found on Voëlklip Beach yesterday. I love the way that the tip of the pile lines up with the strange cloud formation we saw in the sky. I think this was my zen moment of the day.

The Speckled Thick Knee (Dikkop)
Behind our house in Kwaaiwater, Hermanus is a green belt that verges the Golf Course. On this stretch of land there is a fynbos garden. It is here that I came across a breeding pair of Speckled Thick Knee Birds. I was delighted to get these photo’s as I had the right lens on my camera at the time. All my previous attempts at a good photo had been in vain.
The spotted thick-knee, which can reach up to 45.5 cm in height, has long legs and brown-and-white speckled plumage which provides camouflage, making it difficult to spot the bird in the grasslands and savannas where it roams. Its head is large and round with a prominent yellow eye and a short, stout beak. When in flight or standing in a characteristic position with its wings raised, it shows a striking contrasting pattern. Its legs are long and yellow and the tibiotarsal joint is expanded, giving it the name “thick-knee”.

The footbridge over the Mossel River.
The Mossel River flows from Fernkloof Nature Reserve to enter the sea at Mossel River Beach. At this point the river is really a stream and no more than half a Labrador deep. With care, you can rock-hop the stream on the beach near where it enters the sea. The Hermanus Cliff Path is accommodated here with this wooden bridge. A previous, less robust version was destroyed when heavy rains brought the river down in flood a few years ago.
This photo was taken while sitting next to the Mossel River, watching the dragonflies dance across the water and the bees collecting nectar in the patch of yellow Gazania’s that you can see in the photo. A little wagtail was catching insects between the rocks and seagulls and Black Oyster Catchers were bathing in the fresh water as the River met the sea.
